NDM case study: News on the Tweet

  • Why are respected news brands good news for Twitter?
The reason why news brands good news for Twitter is because audiences connect with it all so differently. From the survey it shows that the reason why Twitter users use the service, the replies were 'to be aware of what is going on in the world' - 39%, others said to pass time - 39% whilst others said to be connected to people i am interested in but don't know (celebrities and journalists) - 38%. Brand news are good news for Twitter because it shows that audiences do like to follow the news as it happens and like to see it breaking on Twitter and enjoy the combination of Twitter and news content. Twitter offers its users a lot of ways to interact, and audiences do enjoy this aspect of Twitter as from this article it lets us know that audiences enjoy the personalisation, debates and finding communities of like-minded people which are all elements of their news experience. The fact that Twitter is an interactive and informative social networking site, audiences feel like news engages with them better. Furthermore, it can provide newspaper brands excellent promotion, driving readership to both online and print.
  • Why in turn is Twitter good for respected news brands?
Twitter is good for respected news brands is because Twitter's instant accessibility and diversity of content enables news brand followers to widen their portfolio of sources to suit their own interests, opinions, and  tastes. The immediacy and accessibility to newspaper brand that they would not normally read in print or direct online. In addition, Twitter is helping to make news brands more accessible, more influential and more connected than ever before. Newsbrands provide: gossip and banter; having a bit of banter or gossip, knowledge; being the first to know. Community; connecting with like-minded people and Opinion; being part of the wider debate- "having your say"

  • The report suggests that old and new media “are not, in fact, in direct competition, but often work extremely well together to enhance both the media eco-system and the consumer experience”. What evidence do they provide to support this idea? Do you agree with it?
In my opinion, I do think that there are still things that old and new media are not in direct competition but within somethings they are. Like said in the report about that the newbrand provide things such as; 'gossip and banter, knowledge, community and opinion'. These 4 factors would be seen throughout old and new media; but especially on social media as users feel more comfortable in sharing those factors online rather than else where.
  • On page 24/25 of the report, the focus turns to 'gossip' or 'banter'. What example tweets from journalists are used to illustrate this?
The tweet from "@DailyMailCeleb; Do these pants make Kim Kardashian's bum look big?" journalists know that this something that will grab the attention of audiences as they always like gossip rather than the "real news" - celebrity is always so popular in audiences eyes - this for both young and old audiences whether or not they are interested about it - celebrity gossip will always be seen by all the audiences.

  • Do you think the increasing amount of 'gossip' or 'banter' is harming the reputation of news and journalists?
In my opinion, i don't think that the increasing amount of 'gossip' or 'banter' is harming the reputation of news and journalists because they are delivering the news that they know is going to get viewed from a lot of people, news and journalists would only deliver things that would allow them to get revenue out of. Although i would say that 'gossip' or 'banter' is mostly online news rather than on traditional media; highbrow news channel can not afford to ruin/harm their reputation as they would know they wouldn't be able to survive as news is already seem to be declining through traditional media.
  • What does the report say about trust in Twitter and journalists (look at pages 34-39)?
The report shows that there is a huge amount of trust between users and readers. Almost half of all Twitter users, and almost two thirds of newsbrand users, say it is important that news on Twitter is verified by a respected brand. This helps build trust in the content. In addition,as  journalists create entertainment and engagement through their regular tweets, driving traffic and interaction, which in turn raises the profile of the individuals as well as bringing in new readers to their content. This unprecedented access to journalists is considered important by those who follow newsbrand content; almost half of them feel they have a more personal connection with the journalists they follow as a result.
  • Do you think new and digital media developments such as Twitter have had a positive or negative impact on traditional newspapers?
In my opinion, I though as if Twitter has had a negative impact on traditional media as not many people are now looking at the traditional media as much as they do towards new and digital media; for example for news, many people do look at it through their phones. Twitter is moving along with the generation and keeping up with the developments that are coming along with the new and digital media, slowly and surely news will be moved digitally and more online, newspapers are being a dying source - twitter isn't the only source that has made a negative impact on traditional newspapers, in my opinion it is news and digital media developments itself.
  • Finally, how can we link this report to the vital current debate regarding fake news and Facebook? Do traditional news brands need protecting to ensure there are sources we can trust?
Traditional media don't need protecting to ensure there are sources we can trust because traditional media have been around for a lot of years, we know their sources we can trust because they have many people on board who are consistently checking their scores and making sure they have got their sources right as also they are professional people. On Facebook, anybody can source out a news, this means original people too, online, nobody checks if the information is right and if the source they have gotten it from is allowing them use their information or is even correct themselves. What gets posts on Facebook is not verified whilst on traditional news, in my opinion it is.
